Alex Mena and Kianny Araya surprisingly reach AFECAVOL U-21
PUERTO JIMENEZ, Costa Rica, September 2, 2017. - Alex Mena and
Kianny Araya of Costa Rica-2 surprisingly reached the AFECAVOL
U-21 Beach Volleyball Central American women’s semifinals to be
held on Sunday at Playa Preciosa in Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica.
Alex Mena and Kianny Araya had finished pool-play win-less and
grabbed their semifinal spot after surprisingly coming from
behind to beat Guatemala-2 of Laura Quiñonez/Kimberly Cardona in
quarterfinals 2-1 (19-21, 21-17, 15-9).
The other hosting team, Vivian Hernandez and Angel “Macha”
Williams (CRC-1) reached the semifinals after winning their
quarterfinal match to Guatemala-1 of Paola Alvarado and Maria
Fernanda Juarez 2-0 (21-12, 21-13). The home team had topped
pool B after defeating Lourdes Luga/Guisell Garcia of
Nicaragua-2 without difficulties 2-0 (21-13, 21-7).
Katherine Montealto/Anielka Alonso of Nicaragua-1 and Laurens
Alvarez/Xue Murillo of Honduras-1 complete the final four after
winning their respective quarterfinal matches. Katherine and
Anielka beat Honduras-2 of Lois Pinnace/Cecille Johnson 21-14
all, while Laurens and Xue prevailed over Nicaragua-2 of Lourdes
Lugo/Guisell Garcia 2-0 (21-15, 21-17).
Earlier, Montealto/Alonso (NCA-1) and Alvarez/Murillo (HON-1)
finished pool A first and second place respectively.
In Sunday’s semifinals, Vivian and “Macha” of Costa Rica-1 will
face Honduras-1 of Laurens and Xue, while Alex and Kianny of
Costa Rica-2 will meet Katherine and Anielka of Nicaragua-1.
