All set in TTO for CAZOVA Men’s Championship Qualifier
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, July 3, 2017 - The T&T Volleyball
Federation is well set to host the Senior Caribbean Zonal
Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Men's Championship from Tuesday
July 4 until Sunday July 9 at the National Cycling Centre, in
Balmain, Couva from 2pm daily.
Speaking at the tournament launch at the Cascadia Hotel &
Conference Centre, Cascade, St Ann's, Dion Hutchinson, head of
the T&TVF's Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the eight-team
event and an Executive Director of the local federation said
they were 80 percent ready for the tournament which is being
held in T&T for the second time in three years, with the help of
CAZOVA president and former T&TVF boss Mushtaque Mohammed as
well as the Ministry of Sports.
With regards to the tournament itself, Hutchinson said the
CAZOVA Championship being staged at Couva will be a big one in
itself, and he hopes the general public comes out and show their
support to the athletes and mainly the home team.
Mohammed echoed the views of Hutchinson stating that being a
national of T&T its always pleasing to him for T&T to host these
types of events as it's normally of a very high standard.
“We at CAZOVA are always ready to assist the LOC’s of the host
country in making sure a well run tournament is hosted and we
are very confident that this will take place over the next
week-and-a-half at Couva.”
With regards to the urgent need for more funding Mohammed
reminded all of the contribution being made by the Caribbean
body and urged local authorities to step up to the challenge.
He said, "CAZOVA/NORCECA is investing in this tournament over
US$50,000 to ensure the success of the event which will see more
than 100 foreigners come to these shores for eight nights which
mean 800 room nights at the local hotels.
"This event helps to promote volleyball in T&T while
contributing towards Sports Tourism as the event will have a
positive impact in the lives of the citizens of our beloved
nation and will promote T&T Sports Tourism products.
Looking ahead to the tournament, Mohammed pointed out that this
edition of the CAZOVA Championship is using a new qualification
format for the NORCECA Continental Championship as well as the
FIVB World Championship.
Defending champions and two-time winners, T&T (2010 and 2014)
will come up against 2008 winner Martinique, Curacao and Jamaica
in Pool E while 2012 winners Bahamas, ten-times on the trot
champions Barbados, debutants Haiti and Suriname are in Pool D.
At the end of the round-robin series, the top team from each
group will advance straight to the semifinals, while the second
and third placed team will meet in cross-over quarterfinals for
the remaining two semifinal places while both fourth placed
teams in each pool with clash for seventh spot.
When the competition concludes on July 9, the winner will be
crowned champions of CAZOVA while both finalists will also
qualify to the Third Round of FIVB World Championship
qualification, the NORCECA Continental Championship in the USA
from September 24 to October 2, in Colorado Springs, Denver,
where they will join USA, Cuba, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica,
Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Guatemala, along with two
teams from the Eastern Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (ECVA)
in the top-12 qualification process to determine the eventual
five qualifiers to next year's FIVB World Championships in
Bulgaria and Italy.
