Canada upsets United States and Cuba advances unbeaten


GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, April 10, 2010.- Canada and Cuba became the first two semi finalists of the fourth leg of NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit.

 

Canadians Jessie Lelliott and Benjamin Saxton upset Michael Bruning and Jason Wight of United States by score of 2-1 (21-18, 18-21, 15-10) while Cubans Karell Peña and Sergio Gonzalez defeated Alexander Villegas and Zlatko Piskulich of CRC 2-0 (21-14, 21-11).

 

In the semi final round, Lelliott and Saxton will play against Jamaicans Dany Wilson and Mark Lewis while Peña and Gonzalez will be pitted against Bruning and Wight.

 

“We are confident of giving a good show as we have a defined game strategy to reach the finals,” said Canadian Saxton.

 

“We have done a great effort and we know that United States is a strong rival”, said Peña, the captain of Cuban team.

 

Jamaicans Wilson and Lewis made the semis by defeating the Trinidad & Tobago Team (21-16, 21-10) and followed with victories over Puerto Rico (21-17, 19-21, 15-09) and Costa Rica (23-21, 21-16). Americans Bruning and Wight defeated Dominicans Yewddys Perez and German Recio by score of 21-19, 23-21.
