Guatemala takes fifth place in Guadalajara


GUADALAJARA, Mexico, April 11, 2010 – the Guatemalan Selection defeated the Dominican Republic 3-1 and placed fifth in the NORCECA Continental Boys Youth Tournament, which ends today.

 

The winners fought to overcome the opponents, taking the victory with a score of 25-17, 27-25, 16-25 and 25-23.  This was the second match in this tournament that was played in more than 3 sets.

 

The highest scorers were precisely from the losing team, opposite player Julio Cesar Almonte with 32 points and corner player Javier Cerda with 14.

 

On the Guatemala side, the only player that contributed in the double digits was Gerardo A. Gonzalez with 12 points.

 

Jorge E. Chavez, Technical Director for Guatemala, seemed pleased because “”we met our objective of finishing fifth thanks to the fact that the boys followed our tactical plan after having studied our rivals.  We congratulate them for their warrior spirit.”

 

Opposite player Gerardo Antonio Gonzalez, team captain for the winning team, thought the the game was very positive, “although we had some weaknesses in reception, but we were able to attack.”

 

Osiel Vasquez, Technical Director for the Dominican Republic, recognized that “our rivals were better trained and better organized while my players didn’t have the discipline to follow our tactical plan and for that, we lost.”

 

Setter Manuel A. Acosta, Dominican Team Captain, added that his team did a good job, “but we weren’t well-coordinated in some things.”
