Guatemala defeats El Salvador in Central American battle

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, April 28, 2010 – Hosts Guatemala scored a straight set victory over El Salvador (25-21, 25-18, 25-19) in a Pool B battle between Central American rivals in the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Championship.

The home team outscored their opponents in the service category 10-3 and that was a key for the victory on Wednesday.

Leticia Alarcon topped the winners with 10 points and Maria Andreu, Evelin Sanchez and Joselyn Rodas contributed to the victory with 9, 8 and 7 points respectively.

“It was a very close match and in my opinion the difference was in our team play strategy. We played together and followed the instructions of our coach,” said Ada Villalobos, the captain of Guatemala.

“We were a little anxious at the beginning and we had some problems to get started but everyone did their job,” said Sanchez.

Julio Dominguez, the coach of Guatemala, said: “The tactic discipline was the key and our serves worked very well tonight.”
