Puerto Rico defeats Guatemala to win Pool B

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, April 29, 2010 – Puerto Rico overcame Guatemala in straight sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-11) to win Pool B of the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Championship. The Puerto Ricans concluded with a points-ratio of 1.984.

After a slow start, the Puerto Ricans made the adjustments and dictated the pace of the game with their offense and advantage at the net. The winners had a 10-4 margin in the blocking category.

Daly Santana and Pilar Victoria were the best Puerto Ricans with 11 and 10 points respectively and Lucia Castro charted 8 points. Leticia Alarcon had 7 points for Guatemala.

“Guatemala was a tough rival but we improved our game after the first set,” said the Puerto Rican Santana. “I think we still have room to improve in our blocking.”

“The girls started a little bit anxious but then they recovered on time to get a good result,” said Eric Gonzalez, the Puerto Rican coach.

“We gave our best and I think it was a good game against a strong rival like Puerto Rico,” said Ada Villalobos of Guatemala. “We will be ready for the quarterfinals.”

“Our players are developing and I am satisfied with their performance,” said Julio Dominguez, the coach of Guatemala. “The blocking of Puerto Rico was a factor.”
