Mexicans crushed Guatemala in less than one hour

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, April 7, 2010 – The Mexican selection needed less than one hour to claim victory over Guatemala with a consecutive set win of 25-12, 25-9 and 25-13 points at the second day closing of the NORCECA Continental Boy’s Sub 19 Volleyball Championship.

The home team, getting a boost from the partisan fans, was able to keep control of the game thus earning a triumph in the home soil during their first match in the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games qualifying event.

Attacker Jesus Perales was the highest scorer, providing his team with 11 points while Guatemala’s attacker Gerardo A. Gonzalez managed to contribute 12 points.

Justo Arias, Technical Director for the Mexican team commented “we took advantage of the opponent’s mistakes to set our pace; at the end of the second and thirds sets, I told the boys that we were faltering and it was dangerous, so we reset our pace.  I really thought that Guatemala would give us a tighter game.”

On his part, Mexico’s Team Captain, Jonathan Ponce commented “it was a team effort, we built a good triumph.”

Jorge E. Chavez, Technical Director for Guatemala classified the encounter as fierce, adding “we couldn’t define our serve well and our blocking was inefficient.”

Gonzalez, Guatemala’s Team Captain, felt the defeat and expressed “this was an experience that we should take advantage of to help us in the future.”

Mexico plays against Costa Rica on Thursday for first place in group C in the 7PM match.  The two earlier matches are between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico (3PM) for first place in group B and Cuba vs. the United States (5PM) for first place in group A.
