Cuba defeats Guatemala and meets Puerto Rico in Semifinals

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, April 9, 2010 – The Cuban selection dominated Guatemala 3-0 (25-18, 25-12 and 25-8) today and will face Puerto Rico in the semifinals for the NORCECA Continental Boy’s Tournament, which grants one ticket to the Singapore Youth Olympic Games  and two tickets to the 2011 FIVB World Championship.

The match gave some possibilities for the technical direction of the islander team as all players were cycled with an eye on the crucial encounter to be played this Saturday against Puerto Rico. In fact, star player Wilfredo Leon was benched for the first two sets.

The top scorer was precisely, the one player who was on the court for the whole time, attacker receiver Denny Hernandez with 9 points, followed by Romero Dayron with 8. From Guatemala, Gerardo A. Gonzalez contributed the most with 4 points.

Nevertheless, Cuba’s Technical Director, Rodolfo Sanchez, did not play down the confrontation with Guatemala, saying “although I could have used all the players, I always emphasized the responsibility behind the importance of this game as it would give us a pass to the semifinal.  It wasn’t treated as training.”
