Arecibo moves closer to the Finals in Puerto Rico

ARECIBO, Puerto Rico, January 24, 2014 – Roberto Muñiz and Hector Soto combined for 50 points as the Arecibo Captains defeated the Carolina Giants 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 25-18, 10-25, 15-13) to move within one victory to the Final Series of the Puerto Rican Men’s Superior League.

Muñiz finished with 27 points as the match’s top scorer and the veteran Soto contributed 23 points in the victory. Luis Rodriguez and Joseph Gil added 9 points apiece.

It was the third victory for the Captains in the best-of-seven playoffs. The Guaynabo Mets are waiting to the decision of the series after sweeping Corozal in the other semifinals.

Malcom Nieves led Carolina with 18 points followed by Andres Cruz with 17. Jose Rivera and Pedrito Sierra charted 15 and 10, respectively.

The sixth match of the series will be played on Friday in Guaynabo.
