Argentina dethrone Russia as Men’s U23 Champions

CAIRO, Egypt, August 25, 2017 - Argentina swept Russia off the court 4-2 (15-10, 15-11, 16-14, 14-16, 13-15, 15-9) here on Friday to dethrone the defending champions and claim the gold medal of the 2017 FIVB Men's U23 World Championship.

It is Argentina's first ever world title in any volleyball competition.

Led by top scorer Gaston Fernandez on 20 points and opposite German Johansen, Argentina outblocked Russia 10 stuffs to 6 and took revenge for their defeat as U21s in the 2015 final in the hands of the same opponents.

With tournament MVP Johansen and Dream Team setter Matias Sanchez on the lineup Argentina completed a brilliant run over the week, topping the 'pool of death', crushing Cuba in the semifinals and bringing down Russia in the final for a historic title that was a long time coming.

All matches in Cairo are played under a new scoring system being tested: a best-of-seven, 15-point set format.
