Defending champion, Cuba, debuts with victory over Costa Rica

 

MAYAGÜEZ, Puerto Rico, August 29, 2011.- The defending champions, Cuba made their debut in the Men’s NORCECA championship with a victory over Costa Rica 3-0 (25-16 , 25- 13, 25-15).

 

Costa Rica had no chance against the strength of Cubans that gave an impressive display of power in a match that lasted 56 minutes. Cuba outclassed Costa Rica 8-1 in blocks and scored 9 asses.

 

Wilfredo Leon recorded 18 points to lead Cuba in their first victory, along with Fernando Hernandez with 12. For Costa Rica, Richard Smith led his team with 9 points.

 

Captain from Cuba, Wilfredo Leon said “I believe my team did well, it was good match and it helps us in our preparation for the rest of the championship, as we are looking to be in first place.”

 

Richard Smith of Costa Rica recognized that his team lacks of experience, “we are new in these tournaments and Cuba is a world champ, be just did the best we could and we were able to take advantage in some occasions.”

 

Orlando Samuels Cuban coach said “this match was between two very different teams, we won easily, Costa Rica needs to gain more experience to improve.”

 

“Our objective against Cuba was to break the ice, as we haven’t able to compete at this level; we hope to make less errors and to grow” the words of Cesar Salas, Costarican coach.
