Brazil blocks the road to Colombia

CALLAO, Peru, June 21, 2015 – Brazil outblocked Colombia 17-4 en route to a straight-set (25-22, 25-23, 25-15) victory over Colombia in the match for seventh place at the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Callao on Sunday.

Arianne Pinto led the blocking parade with five of her own followed by Lana Conceicao, Laiza Ferreira, Karoline Tomena and Lyara Medeiros each with three.

Tomena led the scoring with 13 points while Conceicao added 12. Lorenne Geraldo contributed 11 points to the victory, all via spikes. Colombia’s Ivonne Montano had 13 points in the losing cause.

Lana Conceicao, captain of Brazil: “It is very important for our team to end the competition with a victory. The first two sets were very complicated but we were able to control their best players and got the result we were looking for.”

Maria Alejandra Marin, captain of Colombia: “We played well all the sets. The difference was minimal and we even had the lead many times but couldn’t close at the end. We have to keep working to overcome that problem.”

Mauricio Thomas, coach of Brazil: “Today our team played the right way. We substituted some girls at key moments and those who came in responded. That was the key of the game.”

Eduardo Guillaume, coach of Colombia: “After booking the ticket to the Grand Prix, which was our objective, the team lost the concentration and we couldn’t develop our game. Now we are going to rest for a couple of days and prepare for the challenge of playing in the Grand Prix.”
