Caguas sweeps Ponce in battle between undefeated sides

CAGUAS, Puerto Rico, February 20, 2017 – Criollas of Caguas won the battle between undefeated teams in Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League by sweeping Leonas of Ponce in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-20) in front of more than 4,000 fans at Ildefonso Solá Bezares Coliseum in Caguas.

It was the eighth victory for Caguas (24 points) to take sole possession of first place in the standings. Ponce fell down to 7-1 (20 points) in the second slot.

The solid defense at the net gave Caguas 16 blocks as they dominated their opponents from start to finish.

Karina Ocasio stood out for Caguas with 18 points, including five blocks, followed by Stephanie Niemer and Annie Drews with 13 points each. Shirley Florian contributed 10 points, including four blocks and setter Jennifer Nogueras was credited with 10 assists.

Gina Mancuso had 17 points in the losing effort.
