Close battle for individual categories in PR

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, November 26, 2013 – At the end of the sixth week of actions in the Men’s Puerto Rican Volleyball Superior League, the battle for the individual departments of blocks, service and defense has become a close and attractive one.

Changes of leaders have occurred or the main performers are starting to receive the pressure from those with intentions to take over the reins.

In the blocking category the leader is Jessie Colon of San Sebastian with 50 blocks followed by Mannix Roman of Mayaguez with 45 and Josue Nunez of Corozal with 42.

Carolina’s Jose Rivera didn’t have his best week in the aces department as he only scored with two winners but still leads with 23. Roman is next with 20 while Cuban Maike Bastida of San Sebastian had 19.

The big battle is among the liberos as Dennis Del Valle of Guaynabo, Orlando Irizarry of Carolina and Jose Mulero of Mayaguez all have been atop of the category at some moment in the past four weeks.

Del Valle leads with 178 digs, Irizarry follows with 167 and Mulero is third with 165. Irizarry is the leader in reception with 263 and tops all liberos with 8.78 %.

Cuban Jorge Mencia of Coamo continues as leader in scoring and attacks with 367 points and 331 attacks and Angel Perez of Guaynabo is the best setter with 476 assists.

Rivera only need two more aces to become the first player in the history of the Men’s Superior League to reach the 300 plateau. He will be back into action on Wednesday when Carolina hosts Guaynabo..
