Comeback win for Guatemala over
Nicaragua
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, November 12, 2013. -
Opening match at the 15th Boy’s U21 Central American
Championship was a five set thriller win coming from behind for
Guatemala over Nicaragua by 20-25, 26-28, 25-21, 25-14, 20-18.
Guatemala had difficulties in organizing their
strategy with Nicaragua taking advantage in winning the first
two sets. Defending champions took command of the actions in the
third set, neutralizing their opponent’s offensive line.
The winners held advantage of 13-10 in blocking
and 9-4 in aces, while Nicaragua was superior in kills by 41-37.
The top scorer for Guatemala was opposite Juan
Rodas with 16 points followed by also opposite player John Leon
with 11 points. For Nicaragua Opposite Kevin Duarte was the best
scorer with 19 points, including 4 blocks.
“We suffered a lot” said excited captain Juan
Jose Gonzalez of Guatemala. “We were able to win thanks to the
union between all my teammates and coming from behind gives us
confidence for what comes ahead in the tournament” he added.
For captain Bryan Orozco of Nicaragua the loss
was hard to take “our overconfidence cost us the match, giving
Guatemala too many opportunities; but overall it was a good
match and I’m proud of my team because this is only the
beginning, we have more to give.”
Coach Alvinzi Pelaez of Guatemala explained why
things began slowly for them “we had lot of instability and
Nicaragua was attacking comfortably; we were able to serve
stronger in things improved and this was essential for our
victory.”
“Guatemala shook us with their serves from the
third set on and my setter made some bad decisions. There is
more to come and Nicaragua has a good team to do better”
