Contreras, Thompson voted CVL Most Valuable Players


ST AUGUSTINE, Trinidad, June 2, 2013: Dominican Republic Elvis Contreras of Technocrats and University of T&T’s Channon Thompson were voted as the Menn and Women Open Division “Most Valuable Player” after leading their respective clubs to the  title in the Second Caribbean Volleyball League at the University of the West Indies, Sports and Physical Educational Centre, St Augustine.


Contreras, competing for the first time in the tournament led Technocrats to the Men’s Open Division title  with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-22 defeat of Toco Youths in the final while Thompson inspired UTT past bitter rival Glamorgan 25-17, 23-25, 10-25, 27-25, 15-7 to repeat as Women’s Open Division champions in the winner-take-all US$5,000 deciders.


Contreras also walked away with the “Best Scorer”, “Best Server” and  “Best Spiker” awards while team-mate Richard Chong of Jamaica copped the  “Best Digger” accolade and Portugal-based T&T Professional, Marc-Anthony Honore, the “Best Blocker” award.


The other award recipients were Barbadian Alleyne London of Big South East Port-of-Spain “Best Setter”, Glamorgan’s Ryan Mahadeo “Best Receiver” and Toco Youths’ Abraham Eccles, “Best Libero”.


.In addition to Thompson, two of her team-mates also copped individual awards in Sinead Jack “Best Blocker” and Courtnee-Mae Clifford, the “Best Digger” and ‘Best Libero” awards.


Glamorgan’s American import, Kim Tucker-Willoughby captured the most accolades on  the night, four, the “Best Scorer”, “Best Spiker”, ‘Best Server” and “Best Receiver” while her compatriot and club-mate, Kayle Mannis was named ‘Best Setter”.
