Heavy winds on day two of competition weren’t obstacle to put up intense performances especially in the last match of the men’s field when Richard Smith and Sebastian Valenciano caused a major upset defeating host Ruben Mora and Danny Lopez 2-1 (13-21, 21-19, 19-17).

Smith and Valenciano started off somehow cautious against the powerful hosting duo, losing the first set by a significant deficit; gradually they moved in harder grabbing their second victory of the day. Smith/Valenciano had started their day beating Carlos “Tato” Escobar and David “Pepe” Vargas of El Salvador 2-0 (25-23, 21-11).

“This is a gratifying victory for us; we haven’t been playing together with Sebastian and beating one of the favorites of the event gives us motivation to keep on the good work. We were expecting a tough battle and at the end Central American volleyball is the winner tonight, putting up a great competition at a spectacular venue for everyone to enjoy” said Richard Smith.

Andy Leonardo and Luis Garcia of Guatemala went past Panama’s Davis Montero/Elmar Valdez and Irvin Reyes/Manuel Serrano of Honduras, to remain unbeaten. In their second performance, Andy and Luis controlled Irvin and Manuel with powerful spikes by a 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) score.
