Costa Rica and Guatemala with strong start

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, October 8, 2021 - Costa Rica and Guatemala started strong on the first day of the women's tournament of the XX Major Central American Beach Volleyball Championship.

 

Ángel Williams and Ximena Núñez (CRC 1) defeated Blanca Colato/Gabriela Funez, from El Salvador (2), 2-0 (22-20, 22-20); then the Costa Ricans beat Shanna Rivera and Cecille Johnson, from Honduras, 2-0 (21-8, 21-18) in Group C.

 

Colato/Funez won an important match for the quarterfinals, beating Maria Grace Zeledón/Nahima Silva, from Nicaragua 2, 2-0 (21-18, 21-19). Meanwhile, Rivera/Johnson won 2-0 (21- 15, 21-17) against Zeledón / Silva.

 

On the other hand, Natalia Jirón and Estefanie Bethancourt, from Guatemala 1, defeated Camila Villegas/Ana Fallas, from Costa Rica 2, 2-0 (21-16, 21-14). Jirón/Bethancourt then defeated 2-0 (21- 16, 21-16) to Nadia Soler/Sofía Velásquez, from El Salvador 1, in group B. Villegas/Fallas achieved a 2-0 (21-17, 21-12) victory against Honduras 2 (Reizel Bruhier/Aura Cruz).

 

Also the couple from Guatemala, Paola Alvarado / Laura Quiñonez, beat Panama 2-0 (21-12, 21-18) with Dionelys Delgado / Ingrid Lezcano, for group A, which has 3 couples. Nicaragua 1, with Valeska Hernández and Socorro López, beat Panama 2-0 (21-16, 21-14).

 

The first place of group B and C, are classified to the semifinal that will be played on Sunday, while the first of A will face the second of C; and the second of group A is measured to the second of B, in the quarterfinals this Saturday.

 

The last champion of this tournament was Nicaragua in 2019, taking the title from Guatemala that won it in 2018. Costa Rica, however, is the top winner of the Central American Women's Championships with 12 titles.
