Costa Rica beats Trinidad and Tobago for seventh place in NORCECA

 

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, October 13, 2019.- Costa Rica beat Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19) to finish seventh place at the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship on Sunday at Roberto Clemente Coliseum of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

 

Costa Rica finishes with 1-5 record and Trinidad and Tobago with 0-6 for seventh and eighth place respectively. In the third set, Trinidad and Tobago trailed on 11-18 with five points in a row 16-18, but the Central American’s kept composure for their sweeping victory.

 

Costa Rica led 33-26 in kills, 6-3 in blocks and held a slim 11-10 margin in aces. Costa Rica allowed 20 points in errors and scored on 25 opponent errors.

 

Costa Rican Tamara Espinoza topped all scorers with 20 points on 17 kills and 3 aces and Kiune Fletcher led Trinidad and Tobago with 17 points.

 

Eugenia Ramírez, captain of Costa Rica: “Our goal was to improve our team during the tournament, match by match and today we could see the things we’ve been adjusting, it gave results. We were up in the third, benefiting from our serves but they adjusted their serves as well and we struggled. Overall we improved our serves during the tournament and we are proud with the win”.

 

José Miguel Briceño, Head Coach of Costa Rica: “We improved our transition, when we received we got out fast of their serves. Our serves were stronger today and we blocked more than other matches. We have everyone a chance to play, we want this group to grow, but we need strong competitions like this one, against experienced opponents”.

 

Sean Morrison, Head Coach of Trinidad and Tobago: “The last performance was n tour best, we played better against USA, Cuba and Dominican Republic; in the easiest match we didn’t. Costa Rica kept their game-plan, they didn’t let go; we made too many errors that causes us to come in last position. We need to learn from our mistakes to be better for the future”.
