Costa Rica capture first victory at U20 Cup

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 23, 2015 – Costa Rica defeated Nicaragua 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-20) in a match between Central American teams who entered the match winless at the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup in Santo Domingo.

These two teams will meet again on Friday for the fifth position of the six-team tournament.

Tania Carazo and Tatiana Sayles were the best scorers for Costa Rica with 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Allison Font added 10. Ericka Conto and Eugenia Sequeira each had 11 points for Nicaragua.

The Costa Ricans outscored their opponents in attacks (33-27) while the Nicaraguans held slight advantages in blocks (6-5) and aces (9-7). The winners gave away 22 points with unforced errors to 30 by the defeated side.

“We had some bad moments when allowed Nicaragua to narrow the margin but we kept the concentration in the crucial moments,” the Costa Rican Sayles said.

“Tomorrow we need to work on avoiding those mental lapses at the end of the sets,” the Nicaraguan Sequeiras said.

“The important thing is that our team finally got a victory,” Costa Rican coach Andres Lopez said. “The real match is tomorrow but winning today is good for their confidence. We are the rivals from Central America so the matches between Nicaragua and Costa Rica are always important for both teams.”

“The problems of our girls is the anxiety and the lack of concentration in the crucial moments,” Nicaraguan coach Claudia Noguera said. “But we will see them tomorrow again in the most important match.”
