Costa Rica defeats Trinidad & Tobago for first win

 

LIMA, Peru, September 21, 2016 – Costa Rica defeated Trinidad & Tobago 3-1 (25-13, 25-16, 20-25, 25-20) in a match between winless teams on day three of the U23 Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup By Gatorade at Manuel Bonilla Coliseum of Miraflores on Wednesday.

 

Monica Castro had 14 points as the offensive leader of Costa Rica, followed by Maria Alfaro and Tania Carazo with 11 and 10, respectively. Valeria Campos chipped in with 9 points in the victory.

 

Malika Davidson had a match-high 15 points for Trinidad & Tobago, while Nicolette De Mille and ReJeanne Wallace added 13 and 11, respectively, in the loss.

 

Trinidad & Tobago committed 42 errors to 22 by the winners.

 

Yuliana Gonzalez, captain of Costa Rica: “We had mistakes with the reception but we are working to correct that. Today the anxiety to finish the match affected our concentration a little but at the end we got an important first win.”

 

Braulio Godinez, coach of Costa Rica: “We got an important victory but we need to improve the reception because we will play another time against Trinidad & Tobago. There are many things to be placed at the right level but I trust the abilities of my team.”

 

Malika Davidson, captain of Trinidad & Tobago: “Today we were better than in the previous matches. Despite the errors we battled until the last point and supported each other. I am glad with the work done by my team.”

 

Nicholson Drakes, coach of Trinidad & Tobago: “This afternoon the team had good and bad things. We will focus on keeping the good and on working harder to correct the failures we had today.”
