Cuba improves record beating Costa Rica

 

   

MORELIA, Mexico, September 28. 2015. - Cuba improved their record (1-1) at NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship while beating Costa Rica 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-21) on Monday at Bicentenario Auditorium of Morelia, Michoacan.

Cuba in Pool A earns their first win to improve their record (1-1) with seven points; Costa Rica has 0-2 record.

Cuba fell into Costa Rica’s rhythm, keeping the scores always close. On occasions Costa Rica held advantage gaining more confidence as they pressured the Caribbean team with strong serves. Cuba engaged in miss communications putting themselves on a difficult spot. Finally, Cuba settled and won in straight sets.

Cuba beat Costa Rica with 36-21 margin in spikes and with huge advantage in blocks 12-4. Costa Rica led in aces 3-2. Errors were similar, Cuba (22) and Costa Rica (25).

Cuban Opposite Heidy Rodriguez scored 22 points for a match-high, 19 on kills and 3 blocks; she was the only one with double digits on her team. Mijal Hines topped Costa Rica with 11 points, all in kills.

Cuba and Costa Rica conclude Pool A action on Tuesday facing United States and Canada respectively.

“We got into their rhythm instead of setting our pace. It’s good to have won because it prepares us for tomorrow’s match against United States” said captain Sulian Matienzo of Cuba.

Captain Irene Fonseca of Costa Rica said “Cuba is a powerful team and we did our best; in the third set they made variations in their line-up, giving us more confidence do perform. We are satisfied with our performance”.

Coach Roberto Garcia of Cuba indicated “Costa Rica did well, their serves were effective and gave us a hard time; they have a good staff in charge of their team. We are a team with more international exposure and the result is positive, despite our deficiencies”.

Costa Rica’s coach Braulio Godinez said “the fact that we kept the scores close is motivating and an improvement for us. Evidently Cuba has superiority and we tried not to complicate our own game”.
