Cuba opens with a quick win over Nicaragua

LANGLEY, Canada. September 28, 2017 -    Cuba didn’t waste any time to defeat Nicaragua in the first match at the NORCECA Senior Women’s Continental Championship and World Championship Qualification Tournament (Group B).

Although Cuba lost its focus late in the match, the Caribbean team still managed a dominant win 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-19) today at the Langley Events Centre.

Cuban Daymara Lescay was the match top scorer with 13 points; Amalia Valeska Hernandez led the losing side with 11 points.

Wilfredo Robinson Pupo, head coach of Cuba : “We feel happy about the victory, and even though the competition wasn’t at a high level, the team performed well….In set number three, we changed the lineup and put some younger players into the match. Sometimes they made so mistakes, but overall, we saw them improve. The next match, our opposition is at the same level as Nicaragua, so we have to continue to practice because our hardest match will be on the last day (against host Canada) .”

Sulian Matienzo – Cuba Captain: “We played good, but we know the level of the opposition isn’t that high, but it was good preparation for the next matches.”

Rene Quintana, head coach of Nicaragua: “The Cuban team, we knew they had more experience, are stronger, and they are more skilled than our team.  We knew that coming into the match, and they owned the match today.  But we did the best we could, and we hope to have a better result in the next matches.   It was nice to have a better score in the final set.”
