Cuba sweeps six matches against Dominican Republic

 

 

   

BANI, Dominican Republic, May 19, 2015 – Cuba outdueled hosts Dominican Republic in five sets 3-2 (26-24, 25-13, 26-28, 22-25, 15-11) to conclude the men’s volleyball Maximo Gomez Cup winning all the six matches of the friendly series played in different cities of the country.

 

Abraham Alfonso and Ismael Pelayo led Cuba with 22 and 18 points, respectively, while Miguel Gutierrez chipped in with 9 points. Antonio Rodríguez topped the Dominican side with 20, followed by Mario Frias and Victor Castillo with 14 and 11, respectively.

 

The fifth match of the series at Moca, in the center of the islands, went also to the maximum five sets with Cuba prevailing 3-2 (3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11) behind 28 points by Alfonso.

 

Altagracia Zapata, representing the Ministry of Sports, and Victor Gil, treasurer of the Dominican Volleyball Federation, presented the winners’ trophy to the visiting team composed by the Cuban second men’s unit.

 

Before the last match, the teams visited the Maximo Gomez Museum in Bani the hometown of Gomez, one of the heroes of Cuban independence.

 

Nelson Ramirez, secretary of the Dominican Federation, thanked the Ministry of Sports of the Dominican Republic which supplied the funds to support the exchange between the two sides.
