Cuba wins 2, Mexico losses 3 at Grand Prix

 

   

TALDYKORGAN, Kazakhstan, June 29, 2015 - Cuba swept aside Australia 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-16) in their Pool N match at the Zhastar Sports Palace on Friday, claiming the opening win with ease. Melissa Vargas was impressive with 18 points for Cuba, while no player from Australia managed to score more than six points.

 

Cuba brandished its full might over Algeria 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-16) in Pool N on Saturday. Sulian Matienzo and Daymara Lescay dazzled in their respective 13- and 12-point performance to lead Cuba in their second victory.

 

Sana Anarkulova sizzled with 17 points in the nail-biting five-setter, where Kazakhstan prevailed over Cuba 3-2 (25-16, 12-25, 26-24, 21-25, 15-13) on Sunday. Anarkulova had 14 attacks.  Cuba’s Melissa Vargas and Sulian Matienzo topped the other scorers with 23 and 18 points, respectively.

 

In Monterrey, Mexico, Colombia made a winning debut in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix with a straight-set (25-18, 25-16, 25-18) victory over hosts Mexico in Pool O at the Nuevo Leon on Friday. Cindy Ramirez and Amanda Coneo contributed 12 points each for Colombia, while Alejandra Segura and Lizbeth Sainz scored nine points each for Mexico.

 

Mexico lost to Kenya in five sets (25-16, 20-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-9) on Saturday. Mercy Moin and Ruth Jepngetich topped Kenya with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Mexican Andrea Rangel had a match-high 20 points while Lizbeth Sainz was next with 19.

 

Peru made light work of Pool O opponents Mexico, maintaining top spot in the standings with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-12) win. Mirtha Uribe scored a game-high 10 points for Peru as Mexico struggled, committing 35 errors in the match.
