Cubans Hechavarría and Sánchez downed Pavan/Humana-Paredes

BOCA CHICA, Dominican Republic, October 5, 2018 – Cubans Arlin Hechavarría and Yanisledis Sanchez scored a major upset by defeating world-class team of Canadians Sarah Pavan and Melisa Humana-Paredes to claim the top place of women’s Pool C of the Boca Chica Beach Volleyball Tournament.

The duo of Hechavarría/Sanchez sealed a decisive battle 2-0 (24-22, 21-16) against Pavan/Humana-Paredes. Both teams had won over Marcela Araya/Eugenia Ramírez of Costa Rica. The Cubans by scores of 21-17, 21-13 and the Canadians 21-14, 21-12.

In Pool D, Dominicans Alondra Berroa and Julibeth Payano won two three-setters to claim the main spot. They first won 21-17, 13-21, 15-13 over Colombians Ingrid López/Patricia Polo and followed with a 21-14, 18-21, 16-14 victory against Swan Mendoza/Socorro López of Nicaragua.

In Pool A, Canadians Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson crushed Rheeza Grant/Abby Blackman of Trinidad & Tobago 21-8, 21-6 in a decisive contest for the top position. Both teams had defeated Cristina Almeida/Melanie Valenciana of U.S. Virgin Islands with the Canadians by 21-7, 21-11 and the Trinidadians by 21-11, 21-14. 

Meanwhile, Alix Klineman and April Ross of United States finished with a 2-0 mark in Pool B after a 21-10, 21-13 win over Jamaicans Kai Wright/Sashalee Wallen. They had previously won 21-8, 21-8 over Shanicia Dyer and Brenda Allen of St Kitts & Nevis.

Kelley Larsen and Emily Stockman of United States won their three matches to claim Pool E. The American duo completed their successful run with a decisive 21-12, 21-12 win over Stefanie Burnside and Maria Quintero of Mexico. Earlier Larsen/Stockman defeated Vasquez/Vargas of El Salvador 21-15, 21-9 and Puerto Ricans Torres/Rivera 21-12, 21-6.

Finally, Mexicans Martha Revuelta and Zaira Orellana won Poo F with a 2-0 (21-11, 21-8) over Chase/Joseph of Trinidad & Tobago. They began their day with a 2-1 (18-21, 21-13, 15-11) win over Tolentino/Anthony of Curacao and continued with a 2-0 (21-11, 22-20) victory over Girón/Bethancourt of Guateamala.
