Cubans training hard aiming to Tokyo Olympics

HAVANA, Cuba, March 21, 2021 – The two female pairs to represent Cuba at the NORCECA Continental Beach Championship have been registered in the three phases of the FIVB World Tour to take place in Cancun, Mexico and the other in Bulgaria.

 

The tandems of Leila Martínez and Maylen Delis and Lidianny Echeverria and Yanileydis Sanchez are preparing in high gear on the sands of the National School of Volleyball under the bubble formula backed by substitute player Arlin Hecheverría.

 

They are training under the supervision of instructors Alain Hernandez and Osvaldo Abreu, a mix of youth and experience that can conduct the team to the highest of the podium in the Olympic Qualifier scheduled in Mexico from June 24-27 and secure a spot in the Tokyo Olympics.

 

The series of three events in Cancun are scheduled from April 16 to May 1 with many teams of high ranking expected to participate due to the Four Star level. The one-star event in Sofía, Bulgaria will be from May 20-23.

 

To attend the Tokyo event teams are required to accumulate at least 12 tournaments, a goal to be achieved by Leila and Maylen who have eight thus far.

 

In the NORCECA Continental countries are required to register two pairs even though only one team will be qualified for the Olympic Games.

 

Cuba had women’s teams in the Olympics of Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 but has been out of the last two editions in London 2012 and Rio 2016.
