De
la Cruz scores 42 in GS Caltex win over IBK Altos
HWASEONG, Korea, March 27, 2014 – Stellar Bethania De la Cruz
erupted with 42 points to lead the five-set victory of GS Caltex
over IBK Altos in the opening match of the best-of-five final
series of the Korean Women’s Volleyball League on Thursday.
The powerful outside hitter from the Dominican Republic
dominated the match with a variety of shots as GS Caltex
recovered to claim a 25-17, 20-25, 19-25, 25-17, 15-10 victory
at the Hwaseong Gymnasium.
Team’s captain Jeong Dae Young contributed 12 points in the
victory while libero Soh Young Lee played sparkling defense. IBK
Altos had the Puerto Rican Karina Ocasio-Malpica as its top
scorer with 29 points.
It was a seesaw battle as IBK Altos, winners of the regular
series, grabbed the second and third sets prompting a reaction
by GS Caltex led by De la Cruz, who was coming from two
outstanding performances in the semifinal round.
Playing focused since the start of the fourth set, GS Caltex
dominated to force the tie-breaker they won easily from start to
finish.
“I am very glad with the victory,” De la Cruz said. “It was not
easy as the score shows but we were able to recover on time to
get the victory as visitors.”
“It is just one victory and we need to keep playing hard and
playing as a team to win again on Saturday and then go back
home,” she added. |
