Dominican Republic defeats Ponce to open friendly series

PONCE, Puerto Rico, January 11, 2017 – The Dominican Republic Women’s National Team defeated Ponce Lionesses 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-13) on Tuesday in the first match of a friendly volleyball ahead of the start of the Puerto Rican Female Superior League.

Playing before a good crowd at Salvador Dijols Pavilion, the two teams battled closely for the first two sets before the Dominican squad took control of the match.

Yonkaira Peña and Gina Mambru had 17 and 10 points, respectively, as the two best scorers for the winning side. Jineiry Martinez finished with 9 points while Gaila Gonzalez added 8 points in the victory.

Taylor Simpson and Gina Mancuso, foreign reinforcement players of Ponce, finished with 15 and 8 points, respectively, as the most prolific scorers for the defeated side. Nelmarie Cruz had 7 points in the loss.

The next match will take place on Thursday night.
