Dominican Republic stops Peru in four sets

 

   

LIMA, Peru, June 14, 2015 - Dominican Republic held off a late reaction of Peru and went on to win 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20) for a 2-0 record in Pool B at the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum in Lima, Peru. . It was the second loss in a row for the home side.

 

The winners committed 30 unforced errors to 33 by the losers and held 6-3 and 3-1 margins in blocks and aces, respectively.

 

Yonkaira Peña finished as the best scorer for the Dominican Republic with 18 points, followed by Brayelin Martinez and Marianne Fersola with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Peruvian Angela Leyva was the top scorer of the match with 19 points while Mirtha Uribe added 10.

 

“This match helped us to continue getting playing rhythm and for those players who were out because of injuries keep adapting to the ball. Now we have to think about tomorrow’s match,” said Prisilla Rivera, captain of Dominican Republic.

 

Marcos Kwiek, the coach of Dominican Republic showed satisfaction for the victory and added: “It is another step towards the qualification that we are looking for, and today we gave a little more work to the players coming back from injuries. We were able to take advantage from Peru’s mistakes and now we have to focus on tomorrow’s match, the most important in the world for us.”

 

Clarivett Yllescas, captain of Peru, said: “We had many errors that the Dominicans took advantage of, especially in our serves. Tomorrow is a strong day so we need to keep training for what lies ahead of us.”

 

Mauro Marasciulo, coach of Peru, said: “Unfortunately we made too many errors with our serves and now we have to talk a little more about concentration. As a team it was an interesting match. Leyva is growing a lot at the opposite position. No matter the result, I am satisfied with my team.”
