Dominican Republic sweeps Chile to open friendly series

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, May 2, 2017 – The Dominican Republic’s U20 Women’s Volleyball National Team defeated Chile in straight sets 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-14) in the first match of a friendly series held at the Volleyball Complex in Santo Domingo on Monday.

The Dominican team, already qualified to the age-group FIVB World Championship to be held in Boca del Rio and Cordoba, Mexico from July 7-16, will be defending the title at the U20 Pan American Cup later this week in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Chile will be one of teams vying for the two vacancies –one for South America and one for Norceca- to the world event reserved at the U20 Cup.

Erika Asencio notched 10 points as the best Dominican scorer, followed by Vielka Peralta and Yaneiris Rodriguez with 9 and 8 points, respectively. Chile’s Karen Morales topped all the players with 13 points.

After two tight sets, the Dominicans dominated in the third set decided by a wide margin.

Last week, the Dominicans held a friendly series with Cuba, another team among the participants in the Pan American Cup.
