Dominican Republic sweeps Japan in Montreux


MONTREUX, Switzerland, May 28, 2013 – The Dominican Republic made an auspicious debut at the 2013 Montreux Volley Masters by sweeping Japan 25-19, 25-16, 25-22 on Wednesday.


The Dominicans are making their first appearance in Montreux since they debuted in the traditional women’s tournament in 2003.


Scoring-machine Bethania De la Cruz finished with 17 points, with five blocks included, to lead the winner’s offense. Prisilla Rivera added 14 while Annerys Vargas and Candida Arias had five and three blocks respectively as each contributed 11 points to the win.


The winners held a 16-7 advantage in blocks and 4-1 in aces.


In the other matches of Wednesday, China would play Russia while Brazil meets Switzerland. Italy and Germany had a day off.
