Duel of Cubans in men’s semifinals in Tobago

TOBAGO, November 26, 2016 – It will be a Cuban duel in the first men’s semifinal of the Trinidad & Tobago Beach Volleyball Tournament on Sunday when the final event of the NORCECA Circuit closes out here.

Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez, owners of three titles this season and quarterfinalists at the Rio Olympic Games, will face compatriots Karell Peña and Daisel Quesada to open the final four phase of the men’s competition.

The other semifinal features a clash between neighbors as Sam Schachter and Sam Pedlow of Canada-A will be challenging William Allen and Theodore Brunner of United States-A.

The Cuban teams had a smooth road into the semifinals as Diaz and Gonzalez beat Luis Garcia and Erick Garrido of Guatemala 21-14, 21-14 in the quarterfinals while Peña and Quesada overwhelmed Grant O’Gorman and Michael Plantinga of Canada-B 21-12, 21-10.

It was not different for the other semifinalists as Schachter and Pedlow dominated Mark Burik and Stafford Slick of United States-B 21-14, 21-15 while Allen and Brunner stormed past Daneil Williams and Marh Phillip of Trinidad & Tobago-A 21-13, 21-12.

Schachter and Pedlow won their two remaining group matches over Dillon Lesniak and Ozz Borges of U.S. Virgin Islands 21-12, 21-9 and against Peña and Quesada 22-20, 21-17 to claim first place in Pool A. Their compatriots O’Gorman and Plantinga won Pool B by defeating Franklin Flores and Armando Guatemala of El Salvador 21-16, 22-20 and by edging Burik and Slick 28-26, 21-13.

Allen and Brunner won Pool C following a 21-19, 21-15 victory over Garcia and Garrido while Diaz and Gonzalez finished atop of Pool D after a 21-10, 21-13 win against Williams and Phillip.
