Female Cuban Teams to arrive in DR on Sunday

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, May 3, 2014 – Cuba’s female U18 and U20 female volleyball teams are to arrive in Santo Domingo on Sunday to train and play against their corresponding sides from the Dominican Republic.

Cristobal Marte Hoffiz, Chairman of the Dominican Republic Volleyball Federation’s female program, made the announcement on Saturday.

“We are very glad to receive the Cuban training teams as the national volleyball forces of both countries continue their preparation for the NORCECA Continental Championships during summer season,” Marte Hoffiz said.

“Those teams will train and play matches for one week at the facilities of the volleyball complex located in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Park in Santo Domingo, and will be of benefit for both countries’ sides,” he added.

The NORCECA U18 Continental Championship, which grants three spots to the FIVB World Championship in 2015, will take place in Costa Rica from June 22-28 while the U20 will be contested in Guatemala from July 6-14 with two vacancies available to next year’s world championship.

The Dominican Republic U20 Team is currently the number one ranked team in NORCECA while Cuba is ranked 5th at a continental level. In the U18 class, the Dominicans are ranked 2nd and Cuba has no ranking.
