Five women’s teams for one spot in Trinidad
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, July 14, 2014 - Trinidad and Tobago
will host the NORCECA Final Qualifying Tournament for the
Women’s World Volleyball Championships from Wednesday until
Sunday at the Sport & Physical Education Centre of the St
Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies.
Costa Rica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and T&T, the runners-up in
the five groups in the third and final round of NORCECA (North,
Central America and the Caribbean) qualifying recently, will be
involved and the winning team will secure the 24th and
final place in the World Championships, to be staged in Italy
from September 23 to October 12.
Costa Rica is only one of the participating countries with
experience in “Worlds” and, they have, in fact, competed in the
last two editions of the tournament.
They were last involved in the Pan American Cup in Mexico when
they placed tenth of 11 in Mexico last month.
The hosts finished eighth in that tournament to secure the final
NORCECA ticket to World Grand Prix in July next year in the
T&T, the lowest-ranked team in that tournament at No. 31 in the
world, did not win a match and ended up 11th and
last, but they did take the first two sets in their clash
against the Mexicans.
T&T have beaten both Costa Rica and Mexico before, but not in
the same tournament.
There is very little between them in the world rankings as
Mexico is ranked 28th in the world, one place ahead
of Costa Rica and three in front of T&T.
The Nicaraguans are ranked 46th, while the
Panamanians bring up the rear at No. 55 in the world.
The teams are expected to start arriving on Monday 14th and the
technical meeting on Tuesday 15th at the team’s Hotel in Port of
Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the United
States will be the other NORCECA representatives in the World
