Flint & Larsen among women’s semifinalists in Cayman Islands


GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, April 22, 2017 – Defending champions Betsi Flint and Kelley Larsen of USA-A advanced to the women’s semifinals of the Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball Tournament where they will face compatriots Jace Pardon and Lara Dykstra on Sunday morning.


The other semifinal contest will have top-seeded Cubans Lidiannis Echeverria and Leila Martinez, winners in La Paz, Mexico two weeks ago, facing second seeded Jamie Broder and Caleigh Whitaker of Canada-A.


All semifinalists finished with undefeated records in the preliminary pool play which concluded on Saturday morning at Seven-Mile Beach.


In Saturday’s quarterfinals, Flint/Larsen subdued Melissa Burrowes and Ileann Powery of Cayman Islands-B 2-0 (21-4, 21-11) while Pardon/Dykstra defeated Puerto Rico’s Valeria Porrata-Doria and Ashley Vasquez 2-0 (21-7, 22-11).


Echeverria/Martinez dispatched Guatemala’s Maria José Orellana and Blanca Recinos 2-0 (21-12, 21-7) while Broder/Whitaker beat Nicaragua’s Lolette Rodríguez and Swan Mendoza 2-0 (21-15, 21-16).

Pool A: CUB d CAY-B 2-0 (21-7, 21-7). Pool B: USA-A d GUA 2-0 (21-11, 21-9). Pool C: NCA d ISV 2-0 (21-7, 22-20). Pool D: CAN-A d CAY-A 2-0 (21-8, 21-12), USA-B d CRC 2-0 (21-0, 21-0). Quarterfinals: CUB d GUA 2-0 (21-12, 21-7), USA-A d CAY-B 2-0 (21-4, 21-11), USA-B d PUR 2-0 (21-7, 21-11), CAN-A d NCA 2-0 (21-15, 21-16).
