Glenn Quinlan re-elected ECVA president

CASTRIES, St Lucia, March 8, 2015 - Thirteen members of the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) assembled in St. Lucia for their annual general meeting have re-elected Glenn Quinlan of St Kitts and Nevis as president of the NORCECA regional body.

Joining Quinlan in the new executive committee are vice president Sabina Clement of British Virgin Islands,  Brian Louisy of St Lucia, general secretary,  Wilbur Harrigan of Antigua, treasurer, and Alana McMaster of St Vincent and Grenadines, member.

Countries present were Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, St. Martin, Saba, St. Kitts, Montserrat St. Eustatius, St. Marteen, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia.

Brian Lousy president of the local volleyball association extended a warm welcome to all participants and encouraged members to continue working to improve volleyball within the ECVA.

His remarks set the stage for a very enthusiastic report presented by NORCECA’s President, Cristobal Marte Hoffiz.

NORCECA’s President outlined the achievements over the past four years and also rendered the corresponding financial report audited by the external auditors Ernst & Young.  One major achievement is that all regional members of the ECVA can now participate in the Caribbean and Central American Games.

Over the course of the past four years, NORCECA has invested USD$2,102,840.11 through the Continental Development Plan, in the form of Courses, Equipment Allocation, Sports Courts Volleyball Surface, Seminars, Beach Continental Tours participation, Beach Continental Cups, World Championships Qualification Tournaments, Youth and Junior Programs, Senior Competitions and Coaching technical Assistance to member associations.

It was also reported that events staged within the grouping have grown in stature.  A shiny example of this is proposed 56 teams that will be participating in this year’s Continental Cup that is slated for April in Antigua and Barbuda.

St. Lucia came in for high praise from President Marte Hoffiz as he highlighted their achievements in regional and international competitions and their push towards improving volleyball in the region.  His presentation was encapsulated in his mantra “we will provide you with the necessary assistance to build your house but you must do the work”.

During his presentation, Quinlan highlighted several projects in the pipeline.  One such project looked at the implementation of a sustainable school development program that can produce athletes that can feed into youth, junior and senior teams.   The proposed ideas will be further refined before a formal presentation can be made to NORCECA.

The meeting was formally closed by Louisy as he thanked participants for their commitment to volleyball in the region.
