Guatemala defeats Honduras for women’s Bronze


MANAGUA, Nicaragua, December 16. 2017. - Guatemala defeated Honduras 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 30-28) to win the bronze medal of the women’s Volleyball tournament of the XI Central American Games at Alexis Argüello sport complex.


Guatemala only needed to win one set to finish third place of the women’s competition. This is Guatemala’s third bronze in the history of the Games of a total of six, winning silver in 1973, 2001 and 2013, and bronze in 1986 and 1990.


Guatemala finishes with 4-2 win-loss record and 19 points, while Honduras in fourth place ends with 2-4 and 11 points.


Guatemala managed the victory on better margin in aces 14-8 and scoring on 43 opponent errors, limiting their own to 29. Honduras did better in kills with wide 53-36 margin, thanks to impressive 31 points by Cecille Johnson. Both teams scored on 8 blocks.


Middle blocker Astrid Gonzalez led Guatemala with 17 points on 10 kills, 4 blocks and 3 aces; outside hitter Blanca Recinos contributed with 14 points with 9 aces and opposite Rut Gomez added 13 points.


Captain of Guatemala Blanca Recinos: “Our goal was to add a medal to Guatemala’s general standing in the Games, leaving aside the color; we fought strong to win it. Our coaching staff will analyze our foes and strengths during the tournament, to design a plan from there. We are a solid team, this is our third international tournament together and we can build new strategies with some other players to support the team”.


Captain of Honduras Tessa Flores: “We did not execute our different strategies, one of them was service. We learned a lot; we need to be more aggressive, play with passion and desire to play harder because our opponents were not out of reach”.
