United States Holds off Surging Puerto Rico

 

   

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, August 16, 2015.- Guatemala earned their first victory a the opening match of the XI Girls’ U-18 Central American Championship by defeating Panama in straight sets 25-8, 25-12, 25-5. 

 

Under the conduction of Coach Edgar Callejas, Guatemala dominated the match in 54 minutes, where the top scorer was Guatemala’s Middle Blocker Daniela Tornoe with 11 points, Opposite Paola Alvarado added 6 points. For Panama, Selena Urbina scored 2 points.

 

Guatemala scored 32 points by Panama errors, while committing 19, Guatemala was better in blocking 11-9.

 

Carmen Gomez, captain of Guatemala said “we needed to do a good job today, we played at our own rhythm and followed our coaches’ instructions, we failed in serves”.

 

Nayoisse Cambell captain of Panama spoke about the result “it wasn’t a nice match for Panama, but we will improve, we need to communicate better and adjusts our errors”.

 

Edgar Callejas, Guatemala’s coach: “this category has a lot of expectation, we don’t know each other. The first match is always difficult for everybody, it’s the first international experience for both sides, and my team did well and with a good performance”.

 

Clarke Eliot, Panama’s coach said “the same as the professor said, it’s the girls first trip, rules are different, five sets, our serves failed, the receiving also and our defense didn´t move well”.

 

Guatemala has the day off on Monday while Panama will have their second appearance facing the local team Costa Rica.
