Guatemala retains AFECAVOL Women’s U-20 title

 

SANTA ROSA DE COPAN, Honduras, August 25, 2013.- Guatemala defeated Panama 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-12) to retain the Central American Title at the 15thWomen’s U-20 Central American Championship.

 

This is Guatemala’s second consecutive title of a total of five in their possession. The champions conclude the tournament with perfect win-loss record 6-0 and a total of 29 points. Panama concludes with record of 1-5.

 

In their last performance Guatemala beat Panama with enormous advantage in spikes (38-12) and in service aces (10-2); they were also better in blocking (3-1).

 

Best scorers for Guatemala were Spiker Astrid Chacon with 13 points, Middle Blocker EstefanieBethancourth with 11 points and Opposite Natalia Giron with 10 points. For Panama, Setter AdjanisArosemena led with 4 points.

 

“We enjoyed the whole tournament, we’re glad our hard work and practice payed off, specially winning unbeaten” expressed Captain EstefanieBethancourth.

 

Aura Chavarria of Panama said “sometimes to win you have to lose, and that’s what we take home. Today we weren’t as energetic as we should have been”.

 

Cuban William Fernandez coach of Guatemala expressed his happiness but most of all the satisfaction of the title “this group of girls played a great championship, I want to thank our federation for their confidence in me and my staff. Against Panama we were working for the players who have a chance of an individual award.”

 

Coach Miguel Medina of Panama indicated “I congratulate Guatemala; today my team played with less attitude but most of all we’re thanking God for the opportunity and the experience”.
