Guatemala scores victory over Belize

 

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, November 16, 2013. - Guatemala beat Belize in straight sets 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 at closing day of the 15th Boy’s U21 Central American Championship.

 

A slow beginning for Guatemala to defeat Belize who kept the score close. Guatemala concludes the tournament with record of 3-2 and 14 points; Belize with 1-4 and 4 points.

 

The winners held advantage in spikes by 36-27 and in blocks by 10-9, while Belize had superiority in serves by 5-2.

 

Luis Ovalle was the top scorer for Guatemala with 14 points, followed by Erik Flores with 10 points. Raluni Bernardez led Belize with 13 points. 

 

Juan Jose Gonzalez of Guatemala expressed “today things turned out well as we were more confident in our performance, I’m glad with the result”.

 

“We need to play with more energy and communication; it’s a tough last day. We have to practice harder because it’s a long way to go” indicated Yserri Palacio of Belize.

 

“The team was more concentrated because they knew the importance of winning in three sets to have any chance of a medal or at least finishing in fourth tied with some of the medalists, which for me is worthy. Losing John Leon was definitely had a great impact on the team” said coach Alvinzi Pelaez of Guatemala.

 

For Leslie Leon the tournament is a learning experience looking into the future “the boys need to develop and hopefully improve for the U23 category. Guatemala made less mistakes then us, controlling better the ball”.
