Guatemala storms into Men’s title match


MANAGUA, Nicaragua, December 15, 2017. - Guatemala had no set back in their straight set victory 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-20) over hosts Nicaragua and storms into the men’s title against El Salvador at the XI Central American Games.


Guatemala’s commanding presence on the court was felt with a powerful performance; in set three U-23 players were responsible of the actions. Guatemala stormed into the title match without any setbacks on 5-0 unbeaten record with 24 points.


Guatemala’s performance is a major improvement from a ten year drought of reaching the podium when in 1997 they won the gold medal. Guatemala finished as title holders also in 1977 and 1986; in 1973 they won the silver medal.


Nicaragua with 2-3 record and 11 points is in position to battle for the bronze medal, pending on their result to Honduras and Costa Rica’s result against Belize.


Nicaragua held advantage in spikes 36-34 and 2-1 in aces. Guatemala did better in blocking 8-2 and committed only 17 errors while scoring on 37 Nicaraguan errors. Opposite Erik Flores scored 14 points on 12 kills and 2 blocks as Guatemala’s top scorer. Opposite Denis Garcia and outside hitter Tito Valdivia scored 13 and 10 points for Nicaragua.


On Saturday Guatemala (5-0) faces El Salvador (5-0) and Nicaragua (2-3) plays to Honduras (3-2) in the last match of the event.
