Guatemala wins Central American duel to Honduras

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, May 23, 2022.- Host Guatemala won the Central American duel to Honduras 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-14) in the closing match of day one of the Boys’ U19 Pan American Cup.

 

Guatemala prevailed over Honduras without difficulties, earning their first win in pool A by a huge 30-12 margin in attacks and 6-4 advantage in blocks, as well as in serves by 6-3. Guatemala committed 31 errors and Honduras 33.

 

Outside hitters Jesús Hernández and Roberto Recinos led Guatemala with 9 and 8 points respectively. While outside hitter Leonardo Villegas led Honduras with 6 points.

 

On Tuesday, Honduras (0-1) will face Puerto Rico (1-0) and host Guatemala (1-0) goes up against Dominican Republic (0-1).

 

Adolfo Rivas, Captain Guatemala: “I am very happy for my team, for opening the tournament with a win. Our goal was to win over Honduras, our Central American rival”.

 

Luis Fernando Castañeda, Head Coach Guatemala: “Both of us played well, it was an easy going match and it took us some time to get started. This is the first goal we reach; we will continue to work so our players can gain confidence”.

 

Héctor Duarte, Captain Honduras: “It was a friendly match, our opponents weren’t aggressive. I believe Guatemala took the win because of our errors”.
