Guatemala wins Men’s Central American Games Managua 2017

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, December 16, 2017.- Guatemala won the men’s Volleyball tournament of the XI Central American Games Managua 2107 after defeating El Salvador 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-14) at Alexis Argüello sport complex.

Guatemala puts an end to a ten year drought of not winning any medal in the Games, after winning the title of the sixth edition of the Games in 1997. Guatemala ruled over El Salvador in sets one and two with towering blocking and effective attacks; in comparison of set two when El Salvador had a better tactic in reading Guatemala’s offense.

Guatemala and El Salvador advanced unbeaten in the round-robin competition to play their last match of the event and decide the Games champion.

Guatemala closes with perfect 6-0 win-loss record and 29 points, while the silver medalists El Salvador finishes with 5-1 and 18 points.

The champions prevailed over El Salvador with 45-37 margin in kills, 7-4 in blocking and 3-1 in aces. Guatemala had fewer errors 15-21.

Guatemala distributed their offense between Carlos Lopez with 14 points, Erik Flores with 12 points and Wagner Chacon along with Brandon Chinchilla with 10 points apiece. Andres Chavez topped El Salvador with 11 points, joined by Carlos Rodriguez with 9 points and Francisco Hernandez with 8 points.

Head coach of Guatemala Reider Lucas: “I am very happy to have reached our goal; we had a really good tournament. Most of all I want to congratulate my guys; the men’s field in Central America is very competitive and they set their own rhythm, even only losing one set; they worked hard the entire competition and today even more. There was little time to recover from last night’s match, they were focused. For Guatemala this is a process that started four years ago, there are five or six U-21 players in the team and there are four years more for this team”.

Setter of Guatemala Adan Ruano: “I am not the regular setter, but I had the chance to play in other matches and support my team; today Gerardo (starting setter) is not here for personal matters, and I assumed the task with responsibility just like my teammates. I think our success is due to the fact that our coach is very disciplines, we respect him and we always follow his instructions, adding to the fact that we are a united team”.
