SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, October 10, 2021 -
Natalia Girón/Estefanie Bethancourt of Guatemala
won the women’s gold medal of the XX Major
Central American Beach Volleyball Championship
by defeating Ivonne Soler/Sofía Velásquez 2-0
(21-18, 21 -17) to complete a perfect tournament
without losing a set.
For Girón/Bethancourt it is their second Major
title since they had achieved the highest honor
in Panama 2018; and in 2019. In the last Central
American, they lost the final to Nicaragua.
On the other hand, Valeska Hernandez and Socorro
López, of Nicaragua, took the bronze by beating
Angel Williams/Ximena Núñez of Costa Rica 1, 2-0
(21-19, 21-16).
Estefanie Bethancourt said that “we had a thorn
from the last tournament because we lost the
final so we came this year with great enthusiasm
and well prepared. The rest due to the pandemic
helped us to be able to recover Natalia from an
injury in 2020. She (Natalia) and I are best
friends, we have known each other for more than
10 years and we have many tournaments played
together”.
"This medal goes to my family, my friends, my
boyfriend who is a beach player too, and all the
people who support me," said Bethancourt.
Meanwhile, Natalia said that “it was very
difficult to return after two complicated years
due to the pandemic, but we had a great
tournament. It feels good to be back, to win an
important tournament like the Central American”.
To advance to the final, Girón/Bethancourt
easily beat Nicaragua 1 2-0 (21-6, 21-12) with
Valeska Hernández/Socorro López. Meanwhile,
Soler/Velásquez of El Salvador, advanced to the
final by defeating Angel Williams/Ximena Núñez
of Costa Rica, 2-1 (17-21, 21-17, 15-10).
