Guatemala’s Andy Leonardo and Luis Garcia win free pass into semifinals

 

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, December 6, 2017. - Andy Leonardo and Luis Garcia of Guatemala advanced into semifinals after finishing in first place in the preliminary at the men’s Beach Volleyball tournament of the 2017 Managua Central American Games in Paseo Xolotlan.

 

It was another breezy day at Salvador Allende beach volleyball venue full of excitement in one of the toughest day of competition.

 

Andy Leonardo and Luis Garcia finished their preliminary round feat losing to hosts Ruben Mora and Dany Lopez in three exciting sets. Mora/Lopez managed to control the Guatemalan duo mostly with powerful serves with a final 2-1 (21-16, 15-21, 15-12) score.

 

Earlier, Andy and Luis had played against Richard Smith and Sebastian Valenciano of Costa Rica, with both teams performing cautiously and not demanding too much from one another; Guatemala took the initiative in the second set to prevail 2-0 (21-17, 21-13).

 

The results were enough to put Andy and Luis in first place and advance into the semifinals where they will await for the winner between El Salvador and Honduras in the quarterfinals.

 

“Our minds are set in reaching the gold medal match. Facing Nicaragua wasn’t easy, but sometimes you lose and we need to study our mistakes to learn from them and perform better tomorrow. Hopefully things will go well in tomorrow’s semifinal match” said Luis Garcia.

 

Mora and Lopez also beat Carlos “Tato” Escobar and David “Pepe” Vargas 2-0 (23-21, 21-15), working hard to recover from a three point deficit (11-14) in set one against.

 

In other results, Tato and Pepe downed Luis Luna and Gabriel Nuñez of Belize 2-0 (21-14, 21-11) to finish in fourth place; while Irvin Reyes alongside Manuel Serrano of Honduras defeated

Panama’s Davis Montero and partner Elmar Valdez 2-0 (21-14, 21-9).

 

Quarterfinals are set with Ruben Mora and Danny Lopez from Nicaragua facing Luis Luna and Gabriel Nuñez of Belize; Carlos Escobar with David Vargas of El Salvador against Irvin Reyes and Manuel Serrano of Honduras, and Richard Smith with Sebastian Valenciano of Costa Rica meets Davis Montero and Elmar Valdez of Panama.

 

The winners between Nicaragua and Belize and that of Costa Rica and Panama will play the second semifinal.
