Guaynabo Mets ends with empty hands

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil, May 7, 2014 - With a solid display overall, Iran’s Matin Varamin celebrated a first win at FIVB Men’s Club World Championship over Guaynabo Mets from Puerto Rico by 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-18).

The result allows the Asian champions to keep dreaming of the semifinals while Guaynabo, already eliminated, left the competition winless in three outings of pool play.

The victory was based on good numbers of spiker Pourya Fayazi, with 16 points, and opposite player Farhad Piroutpour, who added 14. Leveled with him was Jean Carlos Ortiz, Guaynabo’s top scorer.

"It was a very good match of the Iranian team," Guaynabo coach Javier Gaspar said. "Their serve made a hell of a job against us. We were unable to pass the ball and therefore our offense did almost nothing".
