Hector Cardona, president of CACSO, passes away in Puerto Rico

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, June 16, 2017 – The NORCECA Volleyball Confederation is deeply saddened by the death of Puerto Rican Hector Cardona, president of the Central American and Caribbean Sport Organization (CACSO) on Friday.

Cardona, 81, finally succumbed to a battle with cancer after being hospitalized several times in the past few months.

“We have lost a loyal friend and an outstanding sport leader and human being,” said NORCECA president Cristobal Marte Hoffiz, currently in Peru on the occasion of the Volleyball Pan American Cup. “Mr. Cardona always conducted CACSO with equity and respect for the Olympic principles.”

“He will be remembered as an authentic sport man who worked tireless for the progress of all disciplines in our region and will be sorely missed,” he added.

As president of CACSO since 2000, Cardona played a key role in the organization process of the Central American and Caribbean Games held in San Salvador 2002, Cartagena 2006, Mayaguez 2010 and Veracruz 2014.

He presided over the Puerto Rican Olympic Committee from 1991 to 2008 following a career as sport manager that started as president of the Puerto Rican Boxing Federation in 1970.
