Honduras earns Men’s Bronze at Managua 2017


MANAGUA, Nicaragua, December 16, 2017. - Honduras earned the bronze medal after winning to Nicaragua 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-22) of the men’s Volleyball tournament of the eleventh Central American Games Managua 2017 that concluded on Saturday.


Honduras finishes with 4-2 win-loss record and 17 points to win their third bronze medal in Central American Games (1990, 2010) of a total of seven medals since the creation of the Games. Nicaragua with 2-4 record and 11 points finishes in fifth position of the event.


Honduras had a smooth performance prevailing over the host team Nicaragua with 43-31 advantage in kills and 9-3 in the blocking category; both scored one ace. Honduras committed 21 errors and Nicaragua 22.


Middle blocker Ornello Watler led Honduras with 18 points, while opposite German Moreira and outside hitter William Thompson registered 11 points apiece. Opposite Denis Garcia topped Nicaragua with 13 points.


Head coach of Honduras Juan Andres: “We are very happy, a new generation of players makes their debut with a bronze medal and that gives us enormous satisfaction. It happened to me in 2009 with a change of generation, a mixed team with senior and junior players and I also won the bronze; four years later we won the gold; so I believe this is a good base team”.

Today they had a clean performance; the orientation we gave during practice helped them to play well and with the bronze medal. With a more cooperation from the team and the sports authorities in Honduras we can win much more”.
