Honduras is AFECAVOL Girls’ U-18 Champion

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, August 19, 2017. - Host Honduras defeated Costa Rica 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-19) to win unbeaten the XII AFECAVOL Girls’ U-18 Central American Championship at Jorge A. Galeano Gymnasium in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Honduras stopped Costa Rica’s intentions of winning their sixth consecutive title and eighth overall as they fired up from start to finish with a solid and consistent performance. This is Honduras second gold medal in the history of the event; they also won in 2005 during the sixth edition at Costa Rica.

Honduras won the first set with a comfortable margin which Costa Rica struggled to recover in the next two sets. The monarchs led in spikes with 35-20 margin and with a minimum advantage of 6-5 in serves. Both teams scored two points on blocks, Honduras benefited from Costa Rica’s 29 unforced errors while committing 19 of their own.

Outside hitter Nathaly Jimenez led Honduras on 23 kills of spectacular 28 points, followed by middle blocker Reer James with 12 points. Opposite Ana Rojas was Costa Rica’s top scorer with 8 points.

Honduras concluded with perfect 5-0 win-loss mark and 23 points, and Costa Rica with 4-1 and 18 points.

Nathaly Jiménez, captain of Honduras: “Honestly, Guatemala was tougher. We are very excited to beat Costa Rica and winning the title; this motivates all our national teams to continue their hard work and efforts in practice”.

Catarine Leiva, coach of Honduras: “I am humble to say that we worked for this moment to come, I motivated my girls telling them that we would reach the top one set at a time. The team was obedient in following instructions and they executed well our game plan. I knew that Costa Rica would study us so I used different rotations. I am very proud of my team and I want to thank the crowds’ support”.
